Synopsis

This film by Gérard Miller offers insight into the work and personality of Jacques Lacan, whom many regard as the greatest psychoanalyst since Freud. Through the testimonies of his patients, students, and relatives, the film explores his legacy beyond the myths and controversies surrounding him. Born in the early twentieth century into an upper-middle-class Catholic family, Lacan was trained as a psychiatrist and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of culture. He counted among his friends such figures as Picasso, Levi-Strauss, and Sartre. A major theoretician and practitioner, he remains one of the most modern, challenging, and provocative psychoanalysts. Director Gérard Miller met Lacan through his brother, Jacques-Alain, one of Lacan's most faithful students, who married Miller's daughter Judith. Their close and intense relationship makes this film particularly exceptional.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 9

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
