Synopsis
Robert Merivel, an aspiring young physician, enters the service of King Charles II after saving the life of someone close to the monarch. He is welcomed into the royal court and enjoys the privileges afforded to those in his position. The King orders Merivel to marry his mistress to avoid arousing the queen's suspicions. Merivel is given a single instruction: not to fall in love. However, he soon finds himself emotionally entangled with his new wife. When the King discovers the affair, Merivel is stripped of his position and wealth, cast down from his elevated status. Stripped of court life, Merivel returns to his origins, and through his travels and a reunion with an old friend, he rediscovers his passion for medicine and the true meaning of being a physician.
