Synopsis
Gounod's *Roméo et Juliette* was a major success at the 2008 Salzburg Festival. The production featured tenor Rolando Villazón in a notable performance. Soprano Nino Machaidze, then 25 years old, made a striking debut at the festival with a performance described as both emotionally vulnerable and vocally impressive. Directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, known for *South Pacific*, the opera was staged with set design by Michael Yeargan and costume design by Catherine Zuber. The DVD release includes bonus features such as "Salzburg Impressions—Behind the Scenes of Roméo et Juliette," "Love and Death in Verona," and an introduction to the opera by Villazón.
