Synopsis
During the period of the Stolen Generations, thousands of Aboriginal girls were removed from their families by the Australian government and placed into domestic servitude. While officially employed as servants, they were subjected to strict control over their movements, wages, and living conditions. As a result, many experienced cycles of abuse, rape, and effectively, enslavement, with long-lasting consequences that continue to affect communities today. *Servant or Slave* presents the personal accounts of five women—Rita, Violet, and the three Wenberg sisters—offering a powerful first-person perspective on this overlooked chapter of Australian history. Directed by Steven McGregor, known for *Croker Island Exodus* (MIFF 2012), the documentary is crafted with skill and sensitivity, highlighting the human cost of Australia’s Indigenous history through the unfiltered voices of those who endured it.
