Shangri-La
Synopsis
Set in California during the Great Depression, the story follows a second-generation Filipino farmhand as she shares her most intimate thoughts in a church confessional. On the other side, a man listens silently and intently—not as a priest, but as her white American lover. At a time when interracial relationships were prohibited by state law, the confessional becomes a space for roleplay and reverie, transforming into a romantic time machine filled with both ecstasy and melancholy. Within this imagined world, the woman becomes multiple, dazzling versions of herself, free to love without constraint. The piece is the 21st commission in the Miu Miu Women's Tales series.
