Shirley
Synopsis
Shirley is the youngest of eight children born to a mixed race couple. By the time she is a toddler, the family has relocated to Splott, an all-white area. By the age of 12, Shirley discovers she has an extraordinary singing voice and begins earning money by performing in pubs near the docks after her father is imprisoned for sexual offenses. As a young teenager, she starts performing in "coloured review shows," singing and dancing. Her life takes a new direction when she meets Mike Sullivan, a struggling agent who promises to make her a star, though he is unaware of the personal sacrifices this will require from the teenage Shirley.
