Synopsis
In the second day of *The Ring Cycle*, Mime, Alberich's brother, raises the orphan Siegfried with the hope that he will kill Fafner and allow Mime to reclaim the ring. Failing to reforge the broken sword Nothung, Mime watches as Siegfried completes the task himself. Siegfried then kills Fafner, who appears in the form of a dragon. Upon accidentally tasting the dragon’s blood, Siegfried gains the ability to understand the song of a woodbird, who directs him to take the ring from Fafner. Reading the betrayal in Mime’s thoughts, Siegfried kills him. The woodbird also tells Siegfried of a mysterious woman asleep in a ring of fire, prompting him to journey to her. After defeating a disguised Wotan and breaking the god’s spear, Siegfried awakens Brünnhilde, and the two fall in love. The performance was filmed at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in June and July 1992.
