Paul Bacher is in crisis. Once considered one of the most influential writers of his generation, he has long struggled with a lack of ideas and the motivation to produce a new major work. His book tours have become increasingly disheartening, marked by heavy drinking and dwindling audiences. One night, after drinking heavily, Paul picks up a hitchhiker who later dies under mysterious circumstances. Initially frightened, Paul flees the scene and later disposes of the body, keeping the incident entirely to himself. Yet something begins to shift within him. He starts writing again. While the critical reception is mixed, the story he produces about the death of a hitchhiker also draws suspicion.
