Staring Into the Abyss
Synopsis
Not everyone deserves a second chance. Investigator Wallat is convinced of this, especially when it comes to Hagenow, a child murderer who is released after 15 years in prison, despite still being considered a danger to society. Wallat takes charge of an LKA team tasked with monitoring Hagenow, who is seen as a potential repeat offender. His "unofficial" mission does not conform to any official procedures: Wallat is to catch Hagenow in the act in time to ensure he is imprisoned permanently. Meanwhile, Hagenow moves into a room in the home of the idealistic village pastor Berkenbusch and begins working at the local sawmill. The LKA team keeps a constant watch on him. When Wallat loses track of Hagenow during a night walk, a nightmare begins the next morning: Max, the eight-year-old son of Berkenbusch's housekeeper, vanishes without a trace.
