Jana Friedrich is a young, dedicated doctor from the provinces who is completing her specialist training as a forensic pathologist when she is offered an internship at a renowned Hamburg institute of forensic medicine. This opportunity represents a significant milestone in her career. The internship is with Kurt Bremer, a respected figure in the field, whom Jana admires and has studied through his published works. While she is aware that forensic medicine is not a continuous series of murder cases, she is unprepared for the reality of encountering multiple cases involving abused children rather than high-profile criminal investigations. Through these experiences, Jana quickly learns the challenges involved in securing justice for victims and removing children from abusive situations. When she and her mentor fail in court despite the death of an infant, she resolves to take a more active role in the cases and become more directly involved.
