Summerhill

Summerhill, a seventy-year-old progressive school led by headmistress Zoe Redhead, operates on cooperative principles, allowing pupils an equal voice in its constitution. OFSTED inspector Wharton, however, views the school as a waste of money and a means of fostering disrespect in children, although his assistant, Myrtle, is drawn to its atmosphere. During a court hearing to determine the school's future, barrister Geoffrey Robertson highlights the many notable alumni from Summerhill. A tip-off from a pupil also reveals that Wharton had privately told Myrtle the school was essentially destined for closure and the inspection was merely a formality. As a result, Summerhill is saved, Myrtle begins teaching there, and the children celebrate with a pirate ship bearing the banner "Freedom." Two students whose futures at the school were in doubt also find reason to rejoice.
