Sycorax
Synopsis
Sycorax is the first character in Shakespeare's *The Tempest* to be mentioned as having set foot on the island. She is a figure with little direct presence in the play, known primarily through Prospero's descriptions of her as a crooked, old, and wicked witch who imprisoned Ariel, the spirit of the air, in a tree. However, due to the limited information provided, her motivations remain unclear. The narrative perspective raises questions about the reliability of Prospero's account, suggesting a need for a more critical interpretation of his portrayal of Sycorax.
