Synopsis

This three-reel dramatic film is based on Wagner's opera, which explores themes of chivalry and spiritual conflict. The wandering minstrel Tannhauser wins the affection of Elizabeth, the niece of the powerful Landgrave. Later, under the influence of Venus and her nymphs, Tannhauser enters Venusberg, a realm of earthly delights. Upon returning to the Landgrave's court, he sings praises of Venus, inciting the righteous anger of those present. Through his own prayers and those of Elizabeth, he is freed from the enchantment and becomes a monk, dedicating himself to God. He journeys to Rome in search of absolution, while Elizabeth remains at court, growing weaker in his absence.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 7

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
