Synopsis
Tehran Is the Capital of Iran (1966–79) portrays life in a deprived district in the southern part of Tehran. The film juxtaposes images of poverty in the city's poorer areas with a range of spoken narratives: the official perspective on the district's living conditions, the voices of the residents, and occasional readings from school textbooks. A central aspect of Shirdel's work is the contrast he creates between visuals and sound. His compelling depiction of social unrest enhances the effect of his striking documentary images and the social themes they convey.
