The Ax Fight
Synopsis
This ethnographic film documents a conflict that occurred on February 28, 1971, in the Yanomami village of Mishimishimabowei-teri during the fieldwork of Timothy Asch and Napoleon Chagnon. Divided into four parts, the film begins with the complete unedited footage of the fight as recorded by the filmmakers, followed by a slow-motion analysis, kinship diagrams, and a final edited version. Using this structure, the film provides a record of the social dynamics of the conflict as well as an account of the process by which ethnographic knowledge is constructed from filmed events.
