Synopsis
In June 2016, 20-year-old British man Michael Sandford was arrested at a Donald Trump rally after attempting to seize a police officer's gun with the intention of shooting the then Republican presidential nominee. The incident sparked widespread media attention and placed Sandford within the often-severe framework of the American justice system. After pleading guilty, he was sentenced to several years in prison. The documentary explores how a middle-class young man from suburban Surrey, who has Asperger's syndrome, ended up thousands of miles from home with the aim of assassinating one of the world's most prominent political figures. The programme follows Sandford's family as they travel to the United States for his sentencing, uncertain of when they might see him again. Set against the rise of Donald Trump to the presidency, the documentary delves into Sandford's background, utilizing exclusive eyewitness accounts and previously unseen archival material to reconstruct the assassination plot and examine the motivations behind his actions.
