Synopsis
Andrew Crocker‑Harris is a Greek and Latin teacher at a British preparatory school who has worked there for nearly twenty years. He is being compelled to retire on the grounds of health reasons, with uncertainty regarding his pension entitlement. The pupils view him unfavourably, comparing him to Hitler. His wife Laura is unfaithful and seeks to cause him further distress. Crocker‑Harris must confront his unsatisfactory life and attempt to restore his self‑esteem.
