The Contract
Synopsis
Inspired by Anton Chekhov's play *The Wedding*, *The Contract* centers on an arranged marriage ceremony where the bride and groom are virtually strangers, a fact that is of little concern to their tradition-bound families. At the last moment, the bride refuses to go through with the wedding. Undeterred, the groom's father, a doctor obsessed with social status, proceeds with the costly reception regardless. Polish director Krzysz Zanussi uses the situation to critique capitalist corruption and the erosion of individual spirit in modern society. Leslie Caron, the most recognizable actor in the film, delivers a strong performance as a wealthy, aging ballerina who also suffers from kleptomania.
