The Cry of Jazz
Synopsis
Shot in Chicago and completed in 1959, *The Cry of Jazz* is filmmaker, composer, and arranger Edward O. Bland's polemical essay on the politics of music and race, offering a forecast of what he described as "the death of jazz." A significant moment in Black cinema, the film anticipates the civil unrest of the following decades and includes the only known footage of visionary pianist Sun Ra from his Chicago years. The film also features extensive images of tenor saxophonist John Gilmore and the rest of Ra's Arkestra performing in Chicago nightclubs, all captured in black and white.
