The Disco Years
Synopsis
Tom Peters recalls 1978, the year during high school when he came out of the closet. His mother, affectionate yet overbearing, encourages him to date girls and enrolls him in her disco-dancing classes. Tom develops a close bond with Matt, which becomes his first love, but their relationship deteriorates when Matt turns against Tom with homophobic hostility. Later, Matt and his new girlfriend vandalize the classroom of an effeminate teacher, displaying brutal homophobia. Initially, Tom participates in mocking the teacher, but he eventually faces a moral reckoning over whether to close the closet door or not. A conflict arises with his mother, and disco becomes a source of comfort for him.
