Synopsis
Karl and Kristina Nilsson live and work on a farm in a remote and harsh region of 19th-century rural Sweden. Faced with worsening economic hardship, along with rising social and religious discrimination, the Nilssons, together with many of their neighbors, decide to emigrate to the United States. After enduring a dangerous sea voyage and a difficult overland journey, the group of immigrants arrives in what appears to be the peaceful and promising landscape of Minnesota.
