The Expression of Hands
Synopsis
In the history of cinema, the close-up was originally used to express emotions through facial expressions. Filmmakers soon began to pay attention to hands as well. Through film excerpts, Farocki examines this visual language, its symbolism, Freudian slips, automatism, and its rhythmic qualities. Hands often reveal emotions that the face attempts to conceal. They can also serve as a medium, such as in the exchange of money, or as a witness to a form of skill, such as in work.
