Synopsis
In the seventeenth‑century Korean peninsula, the Jurchen Khan of Manchuria—who was engaged in conflict with the Ming dynasty and would later become the inaugural ruler of the Qing dynasty—requested that King In‑jo of Joseon bow to him; the king declined, citing loyalty to the Ming. On 14 December 1636, Qing forces entered Joseon, prompting King In‑jo and his court to take refuge in the mountain fortress of Namhan and ready the kingdom’s defence.
