Synopsis
In 1979, Panorama reporter Tom Mangold conducted an investigation into the trial of Jeremy Thorpe and others, who were accused of conspiring to kill Thorpe's former lover, Norman Scott. Believing that the former Liberal Party leader would be convicted, Mangold prepared a special post-trial programme. The programme was ultimately abandoned, however, when the jury returned not guilty verdicts for all defendants, and it has remained unseen for nearly 40 years. In an updated version incorporating new information about a 2017 police inquiry into the case, Mangold presents his account of how powerful political forces allegedly worked to protect Thorpe. The programme includes interviews from 1979 with Norman Scott, chief prosecution witness Peter Bessell, and the alleged hitman Andrew 'Gino' Newton.
