Synopsis

Undine saves a prince from drowning and leaves him unconscious on the shore, where he is later found. She has already fallen in love with him. Unable to find happiness in her underwater life, the mermaid strikes a bargain with the Sea Witch to become human, at the cost of her voice. Her transformation is conditional: if the prince falls in love with her and marries her, she will gain a share in his soul and become fully human. However, if he marries another, she will die at the next sunrise. It later becomes clear that the witch had only made her believe she would die if the prince married someone else, as part of a secret test of character. By choosing not to kill the prince to save her own life, Undine proves she already possesses a soul. As a result, she remains human, regains her voice, and begins exploring the world.
