Synopsis
Residents of a rundown flophouse face the brutal rule of their landlord, Kostyleva. Among them is Wasska Pepel, a young thief who ends his affair with Kostyleva's wife, Vassilissa, and begins a relationship with her sister, Natacha. Pepel also forms a friendship with the baron, a once-wealthy nobleman now in decline. However, his pursuit of happiness is disrupted when Vassilissa, out of spite, accuses him of murder.
