Two disillusioned ex‑soldiers set out from British India to carve out a kingdom in the remote land of Kafiristan, only to have one mistakenly worshipped as a god and both forced to sustain an impossible illusion or face deadly ruin.

Synopsis
Peachy Carnehan and Danny Dravot, weary of their lives as soldiers, journey to the remote region of Kafiristan, where they are welcomed by the local people and eventually come to be seen as rulers. Over time, a series of misunderstandings leads the natives to believe that Dravot is a divine figure. However, the two men struggle to maintain their fabricated identities indefinitely.
