The Odyssey

Synopsis

Christopher Nolan’s latest feature, The Odyssey, is the first narrative film shot entirely on IMAX film stock. The production emphasizes scale and celluloid fidelity, employing a custom camera blimp to reduce noise and allowing actors to interact with the massive lenses. While the movie delivers impressive aerial vistas and ambitious set pieces such as a mechanically complex Cyclops, critics note that many close‑up shots feel cramped on the 70mm IMAX format. The visual texture often appears flat, and the film’s composition sometimes works better when mentally reframed for traditional widescreen, suggesting the technology may not yet suit all storytelling needs.
