The Olive Tree

Alma’s family has produced olive oil for generations in the Baix Maestrat area of Castellón, Spain, but changing industry pressures have made their traditional methods financially unsustainable, leading the family to shift to mass‑production poultry. Alma’s grandfather has not spoken for years; he is enveloped by sadness and no longer wishes to eat. His sons—Alma’s father and uncle—are impatient with him, while Alma understands her grandfather, recognizing that he is grieving a thousand‑year‑old olive tree the family uprooted and sold to cover debts, a situation she notes as common in present‑day Castellón. Determined that her grandfather should not die without seeing this wrong corrected, Alma embarks on a mission to locate the tree and return it to the family orchard so he may find peace in his final days.
