Synopsis

John H. Groberg, a middle-class youth from Idaho Falls, travels across the Pacific in the 1950s to serve as a Mormon missionary in the remote and culturally distinct Tongan island kingdom. He leaves behind his family and Jean, the woman he loves. Through letters and personal reflections sent across the ocean, John shares the challenges and humorous moments of his journey with Jean, whose correspondence provides emotional support during difficult times. He faces obstacles such as language barriers, physical hardships, and the need to overcome deep-seated distrust to gain the confidence and affection of the Tongan people he is sent to serve. During his three-year mission, John forms meaningful connections and gains insights in unexpected places. His experiences in Tonga ultimately transform his life.
