The Painter and the Thief
Synopsis
When two of artist Barbora Kysilkova’s most valuable paintings are stolen from a gallery in Frogner, Oslo, police locate the thief within a few days but recover no artwork. Kysilkova attends the trial hoping to obtain clues and instead asks the thief if she may paint his portrait. This encounter initiates an unusual friendship. Over three years, the cinematic documentary chronicles Kysilkova’s search for her stolen paintings while simultaneously creating art that depicts the thief.
