The Red Death
Synopsis
Spanish filmmaker Víctor Erice recalls what may have been the first film he ever saw, Roy William Neill's *The Scarlet Claw* (1944), featuring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. This early cinematic memory prompts him to reflect on the difficult period following the end of the Spanish Civil War, to acknowledge the fears that haunted children at the time, and to contemplate the nature of memory itself.
