Synopsis
Jean Renoir's *The River* is his first feature film in color and was shot entirely on location in India. Adapted from the novel by Rumer Godden, the film juxtaposes the personal development of three young women against the constant presence of the Bengal river, which shapes their daily lives. Renoir's nuanced understanding and appreciation of India and its people enrich the film, which examines the delicate relationship between fleeting emotions and enduring natural forces.
