Synopsis

In a small town in Nazi-occupied Slovakia during World War II, Tono, a decent but timid carpenter, is appointed "Aryan comptroller" of a button store owned by Rozalie, an elderly Jewish widow. The position brings with it a salary and a degree of status within the town's corrupt social order, leading Tono to struggle with conflicting emotions of greed and guilt. As he and Rozalie gradually develop a friendship, the situation becomes more complicated when the authorities issue an order to round up all Jews in the town, forcing Tono to confront a moral dilemma he has never faced before.
