Synopsis

Ester, an ailing and intellectual woman, travels with her sister Anna and Anna's young son, Johan, through an unnamed European country on the verge of war. They stay at a nearly empty hotel, where communication difficulties between the three begin to intensify. Anna's flirtation with a local man causes tension with Ester, while Johan, left to his own devices, experiences a series of mysterious encounters that amplify the sense of isolation surrounding them.
