Synopsis
Thirteen Smiths' recordings include seven made in a club with a live audience. These alternate with five rock videos, two directed by Derek Jarman (Panic and Ask), two by Tim Broad (Girlfriend in a Coma and Stop Me...), and one by Paula Grief and Richard Levine (How Soon Is Now?). The collection concludes with Jarman's short film "The Queen Is Dead," which features a three-song soundtrack. The rock videos, especially Jarman's, are characterized by multiple and superimposed images, shifting color tints, and minimal narrative structure; their pacing is driven by the rhythm of the music. Visual elements include androgyny, dancing children, belching smokestacks, graffiti, angry young men, and a waif in a cap, forming collages that reflect modern alienation.
