Synopsis

Tony Roper wrote *The Steamie* for Glasgow's Mayfest in 1987. Set during Hogmany 1957, the play follows a spirited group of Glasgow women—Mrs Culfeathers, Dolly, Doreen, and the unstoppable Magrit—as they gather at The Steamie to do the traditional family wash before the New Year. *The Steamie* is a humorous snapshot of Glasgow's social history, where the washing was made easier by the women's shared laughter, sorrow, and a steady flow of scandalous gossip. This is the definitive version of the most popular play of the last 20 years, featuring an all-star cast: Dorothy Paul as Magrit, Eileen McCallum as Dolly, Kate Murphy as Doreen, Sheila McDonald as Mrs Culfeathers, and a very young Peter Mullan as Andy, the whisky-loving handyman.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 14

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
