Donna May is a grief counselor who becomes the victim of a hit-and-run accident that kills her husband, Robert. Shortly after his death, Donna is visited by Kevin, her estranged adopted son, who claims to have turned his life around and seeks to rebuild their relationship. Donna reluctantly agrees to let Kevin stay, despite not having seen him since a violent confrontation five years earlier, during which Kevin had been caught stealing money from her and Robert. Kevin's aggressive behavior quickly resurfaces, as he accuses Robert of infidelity and begins to isolate Donna, preventing her from leaving the house, receiving visitors, or answering the phone. He also takes control of her financial resources by stealing her credit cards and checks. When Donna's lawyer is found dead after Kevin had accused him of fraud, Donna suspects Kevin of the murder and attempts to escape the house, setting the stage for what may become a life-threatening struggle.
