Synopsis

In the mid‑19th century, Senator William J. Tadlock leads a group of settlers overland in an effort to establish a new settlement in the western United States. Tadlock is portrayed as a highly principled and demanding taskmaster who applies the same rigor to himself as he does to those who have joined his wagon train. He comes into conflict with one of the newcomers, Lije Evans, who does not fully appreciate Tadlock’s methods. During their journey, the families encounter death, heartbreak and an instance of frontier justice after a member of the group accidentally kills a young Native American boy.
