Synopsis

In 1916, Captain Fred Roberts discovered a printing press in the ruins of Ypres, Belgium, and used it to publish a satirical magazine titled *The Wipers Times*—"Wipers" being army slang for Ypres. The magazine featured gallows humor and offered a poignant, subversive, and humorous take on the war. Produced under enemy fire and despite the challenges of gas attacks, *The Wipers Times* became popular among troops on the Western Front. It served as a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit amid overwhelming adversity. In addition to his work on the magazine, Roberts earned the Military Cross for gallantry.
