Synopsis
In July 1942, during the Second World War, the rearguard of the Russian army defends the bridgehead of the Don River against the German army as the retreating Russian troops cross the bridge. As they withdraw toward Russian territory through the countryside, the soldiers display camaraderie, emotions, fears, and acts of heroism in their efforts to defend their homeland.
