Synopsis
In 1885, Africa is portrayed as a rich and tempting prize, ripe for division and conquest. The narrative follows several characters whose lives intersect in the context of colonial ambitions and exploitation. Among them is a troubled European monarch, a Pygmy employed at a high-end hotel, a prosperous yet isolated businessman, an enslaved porter, a young soldier who has fled his post, and a spectral clarinet player. Some characters gain from the forces of colonialism and greed, while others endure the harsh realities of racism and violence.
