Frank Keller, the alleged murderer of a policewoman, seeks release from preventive detention after spending 15 years in prison, but his request is denied. In a moment of desperation, Keller takes his lawyer hostage and escapes from the courtroom. His first stop is the home of Bruno Theweleit, an edgy yet highly respected police instructor, whom Keller is said to have shot 15 years earlier. Following the incident, young policewoman Lena Frey initiates her own investigation and uncovers increasing contradictions in the official account of what happened at that time. Her inquiries draw the ire of Theweleit and the enigmatic inspector Günther Lehmann, who was also involved in the case. After meeting with Keller, Frey begins to question whether he is truly guilty.
