Synopsis
On 13 August 1961, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) sealed the sector borders in Berlin, dividing the city overnight. Escape to the West became increasingly perilous. On 14 September 1962, exactly one year, one month, and one day after the Wall was erected, a group of 29 people from the GDR escaped through a 135-meter tunnel to the West. For over four months, students from West Berlin, including two Italians, had dug the tunnel. When the tunnel builders ran out of funds after only a few meters of digging, they devised a plan to market the escape story, selling the film rights exclusively to NBC, an American television station.
