Karla, a strong, sensual, and experienced woman in her mid-sixties, learns she has terminal cancer and only a few months to live. After a wild life as a photographer of music bands, filled with touring, rock 'n' roll, and hedonism, she has no desire for sentimentality and wants to be left alone to face her fate with dignity. She refuses the help of Fred, a well-meaning, single-parent traffic planner who volunteers in euthanasia assistance. However, Fred's son Phil, a shy teenager with a poetic sensibility, manages to connect with the terminally ill artist. He is allowed to archive her concert photos for posterity—and in the process meets Rona, a funky student. As Fred, Phil, and Karla open up to each other, a meaningful friendship develops. Initially believing they would accompany Karla through her death, they instead find themselves learning to live from her.
