Synopsis
Maila "Vampira" Nurmi lived on the fringes of show business and later achieved cult status in film decades after her initial career. Her breakthrough came in 1954 when she portrayed the "glamour ghoul" Vampira, appearing from the mist to introduce obscure horror films on the emerging medium of television. Her newfound recognition brought her into the company of Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Anthony Perkins. However, Vampira's show was suddenly canceled. Nurmi reprised the role in the 1959 low-budget horror/sci-fi film *Plan 9 from Outer Space*, directed by Edward D. Wood Jr., which is frequently labeled "the worst film of all time." Nurmi's character resurfaced once more in 1993's *Ed Wood*, directed by Tim Burton.
