Synopsis
In 1671, as tensions with Holland rise, a financially destitute prince invites Louis XIV to three days of festivities at his chateau in Chantilly. Seeking a commission as a general, the prince organizes the lavish event in hopes of impressing the king. The festivities are overseen by Vatel, the chateau's steward, a man of integrity, skill, and humble origins. The prince, desperate for recognition and status, assigns Vatel increasingly demeaning and dishonorable tasks. As Vatel struggles to maintain his dignity, he becomes drawn to Anne de Montausier, the king's latest mistress. She, in turn, is captivated by Vatel's authenticity and steadfast adherence to his principles amid the petty cruelties of court life. Whether the two can emerge from the situation unharmed remains uncertain.
