Synopsis
Michal Szmańda lives with epilepsy, depression, and other health conditions. He is looked after by his sister, Aniela. A small source of comfort for her is the "garden" she has created in the kitchen. The two do not live with their mother. As children, during the Stalinist era, their mother was a labor union leader. Deeply influenced by the new political ideology, she neglected both the home and her children. When young Michael was sent to a sanatorium, his mother did not visit him at Christmas, an event that left a lasting emotional trauma.
