“The Wild Language... The Wild Hungers... The Wild Furies!”
Synopsis
A young bureaucrat working for the Tennessee Valley Authority travels to rural Tennessee to supervise the construction of a dam. He faces resistance from the local community, especially from a farmer who opposes his decision to employ local Black laborers for paid work. A significant portion of the story centers on the eviction of a determined elderly woman from her home on an island in the river, as well as the young man's romantic relationship with the woman's widowed granddaughter. The film is preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with The Film Foundation.
