Biography

Ajoy Kar was an Indian film director and cinematographer known for his contributions to Bengali cinema. He directed 26 films between 1949 and 1983, with his 1961 film *Saptapadi* being particularly notable. Entered into the 3rd Moscow International Film Festival, *Saptapadi* was later honored in the "homage section" at the 45th International Film Festival of India. Kar's 1971 film *Malyadan* won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. He also directed *Harano Sur*, inspired by the 1942 Oscar-nominated film *Random Harvest*, which itself was based on a novel by James Hilton. A pioneer of Bengali romantic drama, Kar worked alongside prominent filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha, and Tarun Majumdar.
